At mary + hoss, we believe that true perfection is rarely flawless. While humanity has evolved to admire the precision of mathematics, the symmetry of nature, and the functionality of an intelligent design, our modern world often mistakes industrial uniformity for perfection. We lean toward a different philosophy. We see deep beauty in the subtle irregularities and unexpected variations that naturally emerge during the act of creation.

For us, these are not defects; they are the very soul of the object. They reflect the true evolution of nature, life, and humanity—none of which are rigidly perfect, but all of which find harmony in their uniqueness. By challenging conventional ideas of uniform perfection, we focus instead on quality, harmony, simplicity, and tactile craftsmanship. We design minimal, highly functional objects that are deeply pleasing to both the touch and the eye.

Sustainability is the heartbeat of our practice. We believe that true luxury is responsible, which is why we treat our resources with profound respect. We operate a mindful studio, capturing and reusing 100% of our clay scraps and glaze mineral by-products. By mastering the delicate chemistry of cone 6 firings, we significantly reduce our energy consumption without ever compromising structural quality or depth of finish. This dedication to low-impact living touches every corner of our business; since our very first day, we have completely avoided purchasing new plastic containers, choosing to source second-hand materials and working diligently to ensure our studio leaves as little footprint behind as possible. We create objects meant to endure both in their physical durability and their timeless appeal.

Who we are.

We’re Maryam and Hossein, partners in life and in art. Our journey began in Iran, where a shared passion for the patience and poetry of craft brought us together in college. After earning our BFAs in Crafts, our paths led us forward as Hossein pursued an MFA in Ceramics at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Navigating the long, uncertain road of immigration and the challenges of being far from home ultimately led us to the Village of Kohler, Wisconsin. Rebuilding our lives from scratch in a completely new country brought immense hardships, forcing us to reinvent ourselves while holding onto the core of who we are. Here, in our home studio, we create with our hearts and hands.

Over time, our background in large-scale architectural installations and tile work evolved into a deeper, more intimate calling: a desire to craft objects that people can hold, share, and live with every single day. We love the idea of making pieces that seamlessly weave into the fabric of your daily life, carrying memories and quiet stories along with them. There is a quiet magic in a beautiful object that becomes a part of your daily routine. It acts as a gentle companion, bringing a spark of intentional joy to the everyday.

Each piece we make is carefully crafted from fine porcelain, a material chosen for its elegant delicacy but revered for its incredible, lifelong strength. Some of our pieces are accented with a touch of genuine 22K gold, adding a layer of enduring warmth to the experience. Because every single object is individually hand-carved, hand-painted, and uniquely glazed, no two pieces are ever identical. Each one bears the subtle marks of the artist’s hand and the beautiful variations of the creative process, just like life itself. Our work is intentionally designed to be a permanent fixture in your home, built to be used, cherished, and passed down through generations. While our porcelain is fully microwave and dishwasher safe, the pieces adorned with gold or delicate decals appreciate a little extra care, keeping them beautiful for a lifetime of daily use.
