Artists' Statement

As human beings, we’ve always been drawn to perfection—captivated by the flawless patterns in nature, the precision of astronomy, and the harmony found in design and functionality. Yet, over time, our idea of perfection has shifted. Industrialization has introduced a new kind of perfection: smooth, uniform, untouched by human hands. But at mary+hoss, we believe in something deeper. We believe that imperfections aren’t flaws—they’re stories. They carry the essence of the process, a mark of creation, a fingerprint left behind. Just as life itself is beautifully imperfect, filled with moments that seem offbeat but are in truth, the very rhythm of existence, our pieces embrace these “flaws.” Nature doesn’t strive for perfection, it moves toward harmony. We too, strive to create a kind of harmony that fits into the everyday—pieces thoughtfully crafted to reflect the subtle beauty of process, of imperfection, of life.

In everything we make, there is intention. Our love for soft colors and clean geometry shines through in each piece. We’re committed to sustainability—reusing every bit of clay, repurposing glaze by-products, and firing at lower temperatures to save energy, trusting in the chemistry of the materials to guide us. Our process mirrors the slow, thoughtful rhythm of nature, producing as little waste as possible, all while bringing a sense of joy and calm to your home.

Who We Are.

We are Maryam and Hossein, both born and raised in Iran. Our paths crossed at art school, where we both earned BFAs in Crafts, and later, Hossein journeyed to the US to pursue an MFA in Ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2013. Life took many twists and turns—countless immigration challenges—but we finally found our home in the peaceful village of Kohler, Wisconsin, where we now create together.

Our journey began with large-scale installations and 2D tile works, but as time passed, we felt drawn to craft pieces that would not only live in homes but carry the weight of memories. These porcelain objects, lovingly made in our home studio, have the power to endure across generations, becoming a part of your daily rituals and cherished moments. The thought that our work might be passed down, treasured, and used for decades excites and inspires us. We pour our love, energy, and expertise into every piece.

Our work isn’t just a passion—it’s our life. Each piece is made to be used, held, and loved. These aren’t just objects; they’re companions in your daily life, designed for everyday use because beauty belongs in the little moments as much as the grand ones. While functional and durable, each piece carries the delicate care with which it was made. So while you can pop them in the microwave or dishwasher, we recommend a little extra care for those adorned with gold and decals—it helps their story last longer.
